Couples therapy in Berlin
International Couples Therapy in Berlin, in English
- Sessions in English
- In person in Berlin or online
- Several therapy languages
Living far from your family, speaking different first languages or building a life across two cultures puts a particular kind of pressure on a relationship. This page is for international and expat couples in Berlin who are looking for couples therapy or counselling in English, or in another language they share.
When international couples look for therapy
Different first languages
When neither of you is speaking your mother tongue, arguments can lose their nuance and it is hard to say exactly what you feel. Therapy can give you a calmer place to slow down and be understood.
A new life in Berlin
A move for work, study or love changes routines, friendships and roles at home. The stress of starting over can also be felt in the relationship.
Two families, two sets of expectations
Ideas about family, holidays, money or parenting often depend on where each of you grew up. In-laws who live far away, or very close, can add pressure.
An uncertain future
Questions such as where to live, whether to stay in Germany, or worries about residence and work permits can weigh on both partners. A therapist can help you talk about them together.
Couples therapy in English, or in the language you share
At My International Therapy, many therapists work in English, and some also in German, Spanish and other languages. Each profile shows the languages a therapist works in and whether sessions take place in person at our centre in Berlin, online, or both.
If you do not share a first language, you can choose the language that suits you both, often English, and talk about it in your first session. When a word does not fit, you can use one from your own language; your therapist can help you find words for what you feel.
What the first sessions look like
- 1You and your partner meet your therapist, in person in Berlin or online.
- 2Each of you describes what brings you to therapy and what you would like to change.
- 3Your therapist works with the two of you as a couple, without taking sides, and suggests how to continue.
- 4You agree on the rhythm of the sessions and on the language you will use together.
Couples therapy does not decide whether your relationship should continue, and it does not promise a particular result. It is a space to understand what is happening between you.

Frequently asked questions
What is international couples therapy?
It is couples therapy for partners who come from different countries or cultures, speak different first languages or live far from home. The term does not refer to a specific method: language, background and life abroad simply become part of the conversation. Here it often takes place in English, or in another language you share.
Can we do couples therapy in English if it is not our first language?
Yes. Many of our therapists work in English. You can choose a therapist by language and, if you wish, talk about which language suits you both best during the first session.
Do we need to be from different countries to book?
No. This page is written for international and intercultural couples, but any couple can book a couples therapist.
Is online couples therapy possible if one of us travels or lives elsewhere?
Many therapists offer online sessions. Check the therapist’s profile for online availability, and ask your therapist whether partners can join from different places.
Do therapists give advice about visas or residence permits?
No. A therapist can help you talk about the worries and decisions linked to these questions as a couple. For legal questions, please contact a lawyer or the competent authority.
How do I book a first session?
Choose a therapist from the list above, or use “Find your matching therapist”, then book online from the therapist’s profile.
If there is violence in your relationship or you are afraid of your partner, your safety comes first. In danger, call 112 (opens in a new tab), the European emergency number, free of charge. The national helpline “Violence against Women” (116 016 (opens in a new tab)) supports women affected by violence: it is free, anonymous and available around the clock, with counselling in 18 foreign languages.
