Uses creative expression to explore emotions and support healing.

Арт-терапия

Art Therapy is a form of psychotherapy that uses creative expression to support emotional understanding, communication and change. It combines art-making with a therapeutic relationship. The focus is not artistic skill. The focus is the process, the meaning, and what the person discovers while creating.

Many people find it hard to explain anxiety, grief, trauma or low mood with words alone. Art Therapy offers another way to explore these experiences. A client may use drawing, painting, collage, clay, objects, colour or movement with materials. The artwork does not need to look beautiful or complete. It becomes a safe starting point for reflection.

Чем может помочь арт-терапия

Art Therapy may help people who feel stuck in verbal therapy. It may also help people who struggle to name emotions. Some clients use it when they feel disconnected from their body, memories or needs. Others choose it because creative work feels less direct than a purely verbal session.

This approach can support people dealing with беспокойство, депрессия, grief and bereavement или травма. It can also help with stress, emotional numbness, life transitions, identity questions and low self-esteem. The therapist adapts the work to the person’s history, goals and current stability.

Art Therapy does not replace medical care or crisis support. It can still work alongside other mental-health care. A therapist may also coordinate with a doctor, psychiatrist, school or other professional when the client agrees and when this support makes sense.

How Art Therapy works

A session often starts with a short check-in. The therapist may ask what feels important today. They may then suggest a theme, material or simple prompt. For example, the client may create an image of a feeling, a safe place, a boundary, a memory or an inner conflict.

Some sessions feel structured. Others stay open and exploratory. The client can choose colours, shapes, textures and materials. The therapist does not judge the image. They help the client notice what happened during the process. They may ask simple questions: What drew your attention? What changed while you worked? What part feels strong, hidden or unfinished?

The reflection matters as much as the image. A person may notice tension in the body while using a colour. They may avoid one part of the page. They may feel relief after shaping something difficult. These details can reveal emotional patterns in a concrete way.

Why creative expression can help

Words can become too narrow for complex feelings. Creative expression can open another route. It gives form to emotions that feel vague, intense or confusing. It also helps some people slow down. Instead of analysing everything, they can observe, create and respond.

Art-making can also create distance from painful material. A feeling that felt overwhelming inside the body may feel easier to view on paper. The client can look at it with the therapist. They can add, remove, protect, change or contain parts of the image. This process can support emotional regulation and a stronger sense of choice.

For people from international or multilingual backgrounds, Art Therapy can reduce the pressure to find perfect words. Images and symbols can bridge language, culture and memory. This can help when therapy happens in a second language or when experiences feel hard to translate.

Art Therapy for trauma, grief and anxiety

When trauma plays a role, Art Therapy should move carefully. The therapist should start with safety, grounding and resources. They should not push the client to revisit painful memories too quickly. Creative work can help the client build control before deeper processing starts.

For grief, Art Therapy may help a person express longing, anger, love, guilt or silence. Some clients create memory images, symbolic objects or visual timelines. These activities can support meaning without forcing the grief to end.

For anxiety, the therapist may help the client externalise worry. The client can draw the anxiety, map triggers or create an image of support. This can make the problem more visible. It can also help the person respond with more clarity.

Art Therapy for children and teenagers

Children often communicate through play, image and movement before they can explain feelings clearly. Art Therapy can therefore fit well with child and adolescent work. A therapist may use drawing, clay, stories or simple creative tasks to help a young person express fear, sadness, anger or confusion.

For parents, the artwork can offer clues. It should not become a simple diagnosis. The therapist interprets it carefully and within the full context. For younger clients, Art Therapy may also connect with therapy for children when the family needs age-adapted support.

What to expect before starting

You do not need art training. You do not need to bring ideas. You also do not need to show the artwork to anyone outside therapy. The therapist should explain how materials work, how confidentiality applies and what happens to the artwork after sessions.

Before booking, you can ask about the therapist’s qualifications, experience and approach. You can also ask whether sessions include talking, whether the work suits trauma, and whether online sessions are possible. Some people prefer in-person sessions because they want access to materials. Others prefer онлайн-терапия because it offers comfort and privacy at home.

Подходит ли вам арт-терапия?

Art Therapy may suit you if words feel limited, if emotions feel blocked, or if you want a more sensory way to explore yourself. It may also suit you if you feel curious about images, symbols, colour and personal meaning. It may not suit everyone. Some people prefer a more structured approach, such as Когнитивно-поведенческая терапия (КПТ). Others may need specialist trauma work, such as Терапия EMDR, before or alongside creative therapy.

A good Art Therapy process should feel safe, respectful and collaborative. The therapist should adapt the pace. They should invite feedback and protect emotional safety. The aim is not to create good art. The aim is to understand inner experience and support meaningful change.

Что такое арт-терапия?

Uses creative expression to explore emotions and support healing.

Your therapist will adapt the pace and focus of sessions to your needs, goals, and current situation.

What can Art Therapy help with?

Art Therapy is often used for concerns such as Anxiety, Depression, Grief & bereavement, and Trauma.

The therapy page also shows which therapists on MIT currently offer this approach.

What happens in a first art therapy session?

A first session usually focuses on understanding what brings you to therapy, what you want to change, and whether the therapist’s style feels like a good fit.

You do not need to prepare anything perfect in advance. It is normal to start with questions, uncertainty, or mixed feelings.

How many sessions of Art Therapy do people usually need?

This depends on your goals, the complexity of what you are dealing with, and how structured the approach is. Some people use this therapy for short-term focused work, while others stay longer for deeper change.

Is Art Therapy available online?

Availability depends on the therapist. On MIT, you can check the therapist cards and profile pages to see whether online sessions are offered.

How much does Art Therapy usually cost?

Fees vary by therapist. When no live therapist prices are available yet, the usual range for this therapy is around €80–€140 per session.

How do I choose the right art therapy therapist on MIT?

Start by reading the therapist’s profile, experience, languages, online/in-person availability, and approach. Then check whether the person works with the kind of issue you want help with.

A good fit is often about both expertise and how safe, understood, and comfortable you feel with the therapist.

Can I message a therapist before booking?

Yes. MIT profiles can include direct messaging, and therapists can also activate online booking when available.

This helps patients ask practical questions before committing to a first session.

What if I am not sure Art Therapy is the right fit for me?

That is very common. You can start by contacting a therapist, explaining what you are struggling with, and asking whether this approach fits your goals.

If no therapist is listed yet for this therapy, you can still explore related approaches and pathologies on the site.
