CBT adapted for trauma to process memories and rebuild safety.

What is trauma-focused therapy?

Trauma-focused therapy is an umbrella term for psychological treatments that work directly with what a traumatic experience left behind: intrusive memories, nightmares, body reactions, avoidance and beliefs such as “I am not safe” or “it was my fault”. Instead of only managing day-to-day symptoms, these approaches help the brain and body process the experience so that it feels like something that happened in the past rather than something still happening now.

Several methods belong to this family. They share a careful structure: building safety and coping skills first, then working with the trauma at a pace the person can tolerate, then integrating the changes into daily life.

Main trauma-focused approaches

EMDR

EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) uses bilateral stimulation, such as eye movements or tapping, while the person briefly focuses on a distressing memory. It is widely used for PTSD and single-event trauma and does not require describing the event in detail.

Trauma-focused CBT (TF-CBT)

Trauma-focused CBT combines psychoeducation, coping skills, a gradual trauma narrative and work on unhelpful beliefs. It exists in versions for adults and for children with their caregivers.

Body-oriented and somatic approaches

Body-oriented psychotherapy (somatic therapy) works with the nervous system and bodily sensations: grounding, regulation of arousal and gradual release of stored tension. It is often used alongside talking therapies, especially when trauma shows up mainly in the body.

Narrative, exposure and schema-based work

Narrative therapy helps people re-author their story beyond the trauma, exposure therapy reduces avoidance step by step, and schema therapy addresses long-standing patterns rooted in early experiences.

Who can it help?

Trauma-focused therapy is used for trauma and PTSD, complex PTSD, attachment trauma, childhood abuse or neglect, accidents, assault, war and displacement, medical trauma and traumatic loss. It can also help when a move abroad has brought back old experiences or when trauma happened in a country and language different from where you live now.

How sessions are paced

A good trauma therapist does not rush into memories. The first sessions usually focus on safety, stabilisation and understanding symptoms. Processing starts when you have enough tools to calm yourself, and the therapist checks regularly that the work stays within a tolerable window. Many people notice changes in sleep, startle reactions and avoidance before the memories themselves feel different.

FAQ — Trauma-Focused therapy

What is trauma-focused therapy?

It is a family of psychological treatments that work directly with the memories, body reactions and beliefs left by traumatic experiences, such as EMDR, trauma-focused CBT and body-oriented approaches.

Which trauma therapy works best?

EMDR and trauma-focused CBT are the approaches most often recommended in international clinical guidelines for post-traumatic stress. The best choice also depends on the type of trauma, your preferences and the therapist’s training.

Do I have to talk about the trauma in detail?

Not necessarily. Some methods, such as EMDR or somatic approaches, need only brief contact with the memory. A good therapist builds safety first and lets you decide how much to share.

Can trauma-focused therapy be done online?

Yes, many trauma therapists work online, including with EMDR. Make sure you have a private, quiet space and agree with your therapist on what to do if you feel overwhelmed during a session.

What if I feel unsafe or in crisis?

Our therapists do not provide emergency care. If you are in immediate danger, call 112 (EU emergency number) or your local emergency services.
