There are moments when emotions seem to take over before we even have time to think. We react before we understand, often with the people who matter most to us. We might say something we did not mean or say nothing at all, and carry it for days.
And often the first thing we do is look away from where it hurts until the next wave comes. Because emotions do not disappear just because we avoid them. They carry information: about what matters to us, what we fear, what we need. Learning to listen to them, and to tell when they are guiding us well and when they are not, is a skill. And skills can be learned.
Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT) was developed for exactly this. It is a structured approach that teaches practical skills for living with intense emotions: how to stay present with what we feel, how to influence its intensity, how to get through the hardest moments without making them worse, and how to ask for what we need without damaging the relationships we care about.
This group is an introduction to those skills. Over eight weekly sessions of two hours, in a small English-speaking group, we will work through the main areas of DBT skills training, through theory and, of course, practice:
Mindfulness: learning to notice what is happening inside you, and to stay present rather than being carried away by it.
Emotion regulation: understanding how emotions work, what they are telling you, and how to influence their intensity.
Distress tolerance: getting through difficult moments without acting in ways that make things harder afterwards.
Interpersonal effectiveness: asking, refusing and setting limits, while taking care of the relationship and of your own self-respect.
→ In practice, each of the eight sessions will offer a clear presentation of the skill, guided practice, space for questions and shared reflection, and material to take away and work with during the week.
→ This group is meant to be a safe place to do that work. Sessions are held live and are not recorded. What is shared in the group stays in the group and we commit to this together, from the first session.
→ You do not need to arrive prepared. No previous experience with DBT, or with group work, is required; only the willingness to look at what usually feels easier to avoid.
Is this group right for you?
It may be a good fit if you often feel overwhelmed by your emotions, react in ways you later regret, find conflict or boundaries difficult, or would like practical tools alongside the personal work you are already doing.
It is not the right setting if you are currently in an acute crisis, or if what you need is a complete, structured DBT treatment programme. Please mention this when you enquire – we will be glad to help you find more suitable support.
*Please note: this is an introductory skills group, not a full clinical DBT programme, and it does not replace individual therapy.
Facilitator
Mora Neustadt is a clinical psychologist and psychotherapist based in Nice. Much of her work has been with international and expat clients, in English, Spanish and French.
Her approach is integrative: she draws on cognitive behavioural therapy, ACT, EMDR and schema therapy, and incorporates DBT tools in her work with emotional intensity, difficult relationships and patterns that are hard to shift alone. What guides her practice is the conviction that people do not need to be fixed; they need tools they can actually use, and a space where it feels safe enough to try them.
*This group is facilitated online & in English.
