Привітний скандинавсько-богемний передпокій із рослинами та ротанговим кріслом у My International Therapy, Берлін

Berlin is a city where many people live in a language that is not their first. You might speak Italian with your partner, English at work and a little German at the bakery. Which of those is the language you would choose to talk about something painful? If you are looking for a therapist in Berlin who speaks your language, that question is worth answering before you start comparing profiles. Each therapist has a profile that lists their languages, so you can look for the one that suits you.

Below you will find why language matters, how to search by language, and what to do if the language you want does not seem to be available.

Why your own language makes a difference

The words we use for feelings are tied to the places and people where we first learned them. A phrase from childhood, a family joke or an expression for being “fed up” often does not translate cleanly. In a second language you can sometimes describe the facts of a situation very well and still find it hard to reach the feeling underneath.

Some people prefer to do therapy in their first language, others in a language they learned later. It is your choice, and you do not need to justify it.

Languages offered across the network

My International Therapy brings together therapists in Berlin, Nice and Barcelona, in person or online. They are recruited, interviewed and selected by our team of mental health professionals, and they work in English and in other languages. In our matching questionnaire you can choose the language you would like to speak, and the number of matching therapists is shown at each step.

Availability can vary by language and by format, so the useful question is who offers your language in Berlin, in person or online. Each profile shows the therapist’s languages, the therapies they practise, their areas of work, and whether they see people in person, online or both.

Two ways to search by language

1. Filter the directory

У "The каталог терапевтів у Берліні lets you filter the therapists of Berlin by therapy, speciality or language, which is quicker if you already know what you are looking for.

2. Answer a few questions

If you would like guidance, Знайдіть свого підходящого терапевта is a short questionnaire in which you can say, among other things, which language you would like to speak. At each step you can see how many therapists match. Nothing you answer is sent to us or stored; it all stays in your browser.

If your language is not on the list

It can happen, and it is frustrating. Here are some options to think about, without any pressure to decide quickly.

  • A shared second language. If you are comfortable in another language, such as English, you may find a therapist who works in it. You can tell the therapist at the start that you may drift into your mother tongue, and ask how they feel about that.
  • Online sessions. Some of our therapists work online, so you may find more choice by also looking at therapists in other cities. Each profile shows whether a therapist offers online sessions.
  • Trying again. If nothing seems to fit, you can re-run the Find your matching therapist questionnaire with different answers and see what changes.

Language and cultural background

Sharing a language can make it easier to explain where you come from, but it does not guarantee that a therapist understands your culture, and the reverse is also true: a therapist who has lived in several countries may understand the experience of moving very well. If cultural background matters to you, it is reasonable to raise it directly. You might ask how they approach it, or whether they have worked with people in situations similar to yours.

Особисто чи онлайн?

Some therapists in Berlin meet clients in person, including at our centre at Schönhauser Allee 55 in Prenzlauer Berg, others work online, and some do both. Each profile shows what is offered. If you prefer video, you can look for therapists who offer online sessions and compare their languages.

Preparing for a first session

You do not need to prepare a speech. A few simple notes can help, though:

  • Which language would you like to use, and are there topics you would rather discuss in another?
  • What brought you to look for support now, in a sentence or two?
  • Do you prefer online or in-person sessions, and which days or times suit you?

You may find yourself moving between languages during a session. Mention it at the start and ask the therapist how they handle it, so that you never need to apologise when it happens.
