Looking for help with Obsessive worries / rumination? You're in the right place.

What are obsessive worries and rumination?

Everyone worries and thinks things over. It becomes a problem when the mind keeps going round in circles, replaying the same questions, scenarios or regrets without ever reaching a conclusion. Worry usually looks ahead (“what if…?”), while rumination looks back (“why did I…?”, “what does it say about me?”). Both can take hours each day, disturb sleep and leave you feeling exhausted, anxious or low.

In everyday language, this pattern is often called rumination excessive: replaying conversations, analysing decisions again and again, or worrying about what might go wrong, without ever reaching a solution.

The good news is that repetitive thinking is a habit of the mind, not a fixed trait, and it responds well to therapy. On this page you will find common signs, how rumination differs from related difficulties, what keeps it going and how therapists from our network can help, in person or online.

Common signs

  • Going over conversations, mistakes or decisions again and again
  • Constant “what if” thoughts about health, work, relationships or the future
  • Difficulty switching off, especially in the evening or in bed
  • Feeling that thinking more will eventually bring certainty or a solution
  • Seeking reassurance from others, or checking information online repeatedly
  • Trouble concentrating because the mind is elsewhere
  • Tension, fatigue, irritabilité and low mood after long periods of worrying

Worry, rumination, OCD: what is the difference?

Repetitive worry about many everyday topics is the core of generalised anxiety disorder (GAD). Rumination about the past and about oneself is closely linked to dépression et humeur dépressive. TOC is different: it involves unwanted pensées intrusives that feel alien and distressing, followed by compulsions or mental rituals to neutralise them. A therapist can help you understand which pattern fits your experience, as the treatment differs.

What keeps the cycle going

Repetitive thinking often starts as an attempt to solve a problem or to feel safer. Several things then keep it going:

  • Beliefs about worry, such as “worrying helps me prepare” or “I can’t control my thoughts”
  • Difficulty tolerating uncertainty
  • Le perfectionnisme and fear of making the wrong choice
  • Stress, poor sleep and isolation, which give the mind more room to spin
  • Reassurance seeking and avoidance, which bring short-term relief but strengthen the habit
  • Life abroad, where more decisions have to be made with less information and less support

Comment la thérapie peut-elle aider ?

Therapy does not try to stop thoughts, which tends to make them louder. Instead, it changes your relationship with them. A therapist helps you notice when you start to spiral, understand what the worry is trying to achieve, test the beliefs that keep you engaged with it, and redirect your attention to the present and to action. Over time, thoughts may still appear, but they lose their grip.

Therapy approaches that can help

TCC offers well-tested tools for worry and rumination, including techniques from metacognitive therapy. ACT teaches you to step back from thoughts and act on your values, MBCT was designed to interrupt ruminative patterns, and compassion-focused therapy helps when rumination is driven by self-criticism.

Practical tips

  • Set a daily “worry time” of 15 minutes and postpone worries until then
  • Ask yourself: “Is this a problem I can act on now?” If yes, plan a step; if not, let it pass
  • Shift attention to your senses: what you can see, hear and feel right now
  • Write thoughts down once instead of replaying them
  • Reduce reassurance seeking and repeated checking little by little
  • Keep a wind-down routine before bed, away from screens

Quand chercher de l'aide

Consider speaking to a therapist if repetitive thinking takes up a lot of your day, disturbs your sleep, affects your work or relationships, or comes with persistent anxiety or low mood.
